Microsoft Excel is most powerful software application for office use. And it’s strength lies in the use of advanced formulas for calculating any sort of given data. Here we have listed some of the most common and advanced formulas for MIS. Have a look!

VLookup and HLookup

Excel has built-in functions called VLookup [Verticals Lookup] and HLookup [Horizontal Lookup]

These two functions are now most widely used formula for finding absolute and reference values from sheet.

VLOOKUP is a Vertical Lookup for searching values from first column.

VLookUp : Please create following excel sheet with data in it and write the formula / function as : =VLOOKUP(F6, $A$2:$B$6,2,0)

HLOOKUP is a Horizontal Lookup for searching values from each row.

HLookUp : Please create following excel sheet with data in it and write the formula / function as : =HLOOKUP(“*”, B2:D2,1,0)

Simple Marks Calculation using Excel

This example shows a simple marks calculation using MS-Excel.

Here are the steps for calculating total, average, minimum and maximum marks.

1. First of all, create a sheet with following data in it.

2. Place cursor next to “Total Marks” column and type the formula [while writing a formula in excel it is mandatory to put “=” equal sign before the formula or name of the expression and refer the cell address with separated by “:” colon, which indicates starting cell address and ending cell address] as shown in following image.

3. After hitting enter key you can see the following output.

4. Now calculate Average. [follow below image]

5. Now, find minimum value in the range. [follow below image]

6. Do also for Maximum. [refer below image]

7. Now sheet looks completed with all 4 basic calculations- sum, average, minimum and maximum. [refer below screen shot]

8. The above data can be shown in Graphical way .i.e. using excel “Charts”, just follow below steps.

8.a) First select all data as per following image.

8.b) Then go to “Insert” tab [follow below screen shots]

8.c) Now click on “Column” chart [ refer below image]

8.d) Now you can see the complete sheet with chart on marks details with following screen shot.

Calculate Employee salary using MS Excel

The following example explains the calculation of Employee salary using MS Excel with simple understanding steps.

Step 1 : Create a sheet with following data in it.

Step 2: To calculate Bonus, click on “Insert Function”
Step 3: select “if” from the list

Step 4: Enter the formula as per following screen image [Here Cell value “D3” means basic salary so all values calculated on the basis of basic salary]

Step 5: Press and Drag towards down to fill all cells as following.

Step 6: repeat the step 4 to calculate remaining columns and only change percentage values.
Step 7: Now, calculate the Net salary just by adding all columns and have a look at following image.
Step 8: To calculate Total Years of experience, just write the following equation to get it.

For Total Years of experience column, after getting result just right click and format cells and select number to get correct values.
