What is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition in which the force of blood against the walls of the arteries is too high. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is recorded as two numbers, systolic and diastolic. Systolic pressure is the higher number and represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats, while diastolic pressure is the lower number and represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest.
A normal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mmHg. High blood pressure is defined as a systolic pressure of 130 mmHg or higher, or a diastolic pressure of 80 mmHg or higher, or both. High blood pressure is a serious condition that can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney damage and other health problems if left untreated.
There are several lifestyle changes that can help lower blood pressure, including:
- Eating a diet that is low in salt and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Regular physical activity
- Limiting alcohol consumption
- Quitting smoking
- Managing stress through relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga
- Getting enough sleep
- Consuming less caffeine
Try following yoga poses daily about 30 mins to normal your blood pressure (BP)
It’s important to note that these lifestyle changes can help to lower blood pressure, but they may not be enough to control it. If you have high blood pressure, it’s important to talk to your doctor about treatment options, including medications and long-term management strategies.
